Welcome! I’m a Cornish musician based in London. My work involves directing vocal ensembles, composing and arranging for choirs, and writing and recording music for contemporary dance. I sing and play electric cello and percussion, often weaving in electronics such as looping and effects.
After studying composition at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, I began working as a dance accompanist at institutions including Laban, Middlesex University, and Central School of Ballet. In 2017, I co-founded Quaggy Community Choir in Lewisham with choir manager Priya Bose, and soon after became a full-time musical director. I now also lead Raised Voices – a political protest choir, KT6 Vocal Group – an a cappella ensemble in Surbiton, and Greenwich Foundation Choir – a workplace choir based at the Old Royal Naval College.
Beyond choirs, I am a long-standing collaborator with Dancing Strong, a company led by Adesola Akinleye that creates work for young audiences. I’ve also composed for radio plays, TV adverts, and a wide variety of other projects. From 2008 to 2018, I wrote and performed extensively with experimental folk band The Sea Kings – a hugely formative part of my life that took me to many fascinating places.
Feel free to explore the site – you’ll find recordings and videos, some especially for singers and choir leaders, and others for anyone to enjoy. If you’d like to collaborate, commission a new work, invite me to direct your choir or lead a workshop, or simply get in touch, I’d love to hear from you - email me at jake@jakealexander.org.
