About

Welcome to my website! I am a Cornish musician based in London. As well as directing various vocal ensembles, my career encompasses composing and arranging songs for choirs, and writing and recording music for contemporary dance. I sing and play electric cello and percussion, often using various electronic equipment such as a loop machine.

After studying composition at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance I became a dance accompanist and worked for several years at various institutions including Laban, Middlesex University and Central School of Ballet. In 2017 I founded Quaggy Community Choir in Lewisham along with my colleague, choir manager Priya Bose, and eventually became a full time musical director. I currently lead Raised Voices, a political protest choir, and a workplace choir at the Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich. I am also a founding director and co-leader of Crib Notes, a parents and babies choir with branches across South London.

In addition to my choir activities, I am a long-term collaborator with Dancing Strong, a dance company led by Adesola Akinleye, which specialises in creating work for young audiences. I have composed and arranged music for many other purposes, including radio plays and tv adverts. I have also written and performed extensively with experimental folk band, The Sea Kings. Members have since scattered to various parts of the world, but the group was a huge part of my life from around 2008 to 2018 and took me to many interesting places, including Glastonbury Festival.

Feel free to browse! There are plenty of things here to listen to and watch – some will appeal mainly to singers and choir leaders, and some will hopefully be enjoyed by all. If you’d like to collaborate with me, commission a composition or arrangement, hire me to direct your choir or lead a singing workshop, or get in touch for any reason whatsoever, that would be lovely – you can contact me by email at jake@jakealexander.org.
